Blejnar interviewed by prosecutors in Codrut Marta case

The former head of the National Tax Administration Agency (ANAF), Sorin Blejnar, was heard as a witness at the General Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday, in the case of the disappearance of his former adviser, Codrut Marta, while he was heading ANAF. On his way out of the institution, Blejnar said he wanted very much that Codrut Marta would make his appearance on the one hand for the sake of his family and friends and, on the other hand, in order to demonstrate his innocence in the criminal cases in which he is under investigation. ‘I wonder how someone who was being monitored by everyone in his case with the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) could disappear. I hope from all my heart that he is found’, evz.ro quotes Blejnar as having said. In addition, he noted that his former adviser was not in debt, had no hidden vices and did not know any ‘big secrets’ that could have been a threat to his life. Asked about the accusations made against him in his criminal cases, the former ANAF chief said his innocence would be self-evident in those affairs. Codrut Marta is a wanted person in Romania since May 25, when his wife reported him missing. Afterwards, the Directorate for the Investigation of Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) Brasov started criminal investigations against Blejnar and Marta in a case where they are both charged with accessory to tax evasion and aiding an organised criminal group. The prosecutors say the members of the group initiated a large-scale evasion scheme avoiding the payment of excise duties for approximately 5,000 tons of diesel fuel procured in a suspensive regime and sold on the local market. The total damage calculated by the authorities so far is over RON 21.3 M. A default arrest warrant was issued for Codrut Marta on July 11.
