Covasna accident leaves 8 dead, 1 seriously injured

Eight people died and another one was severely injured in an accident at Chilieni, Covasna Co, where a tractor and trailer were hit by a slow train  on the Targu Mures-Brasov route. The victims are aged 17 to 43. The head of the Covasna Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU), Gyorgy Alfons, said that the trailer contained 15-16 people, although some of them managed to jump off before the collision. According to Covasna County Police spokeswoman Iulia Grigoras, it was the 78-year-old tractor driver’s fault, who did not make sure he could safely cross the railway crossing. The driver sustained minor injuries. He and the locomotive driver took a breathalyzer  test that was negative.  They were also taken biological samples. ISU Covasna, Ambulance Service and Covasna Co Police crews arrived first at the scene, followed by crews with the Covasna Co Gendarme Inspectorate, ISU Brasov, SAJ Brasov and SMURD (Mobile Emergency Service for Resuscitation and Extrication) Targu Mures.
