Bear attacks three people, one killed

A bear stirred panic in Dambovita County, where a 55-year-old woman and distant relative of Environment Minister Rovana Plumb was attacked by a bear and injured in the village of Dealu Mare, Dambovita County, on Saturday, near Pietrosita, where a 71-year-old local was killed by another bear yesterday morning. Later on, the Dambovita Police announced that a third person, a man aged 56, was attacked in the same area. The two survivors of the bear attack are in good condition.  After the three attacks within six hours yesterday, hunters shot dead a bear on the outskirts of Pietrosita Saturday night. Experts from the Dambovita Sanitary, Veterinary and Food Safety Department (DSVSA), examined the dead bear on Sunday, given suppositions it had rabies, and were also to establish whether the killer bear was the same which attacked three people in Pietrosita and Buciumeni. Dambovita Police head, Chief Commissary Daniil Zepis, told Mediafax Sunday, that “there is an increasingly high belief “ the bear shot dead Saturday night at Pietrosita is also that which attacked the other three people, given no other animal was identified in the area. According to Zepis, criminalists went to the scene to compare the bear footmarks with those of the dead bear.Early forensic results point to the dead bear was rabies sick and that which also attacked the three people. Realitatea TV reports that a 30-km radius area was quarantined.Environment Minister Rovana Plumb yesterday voiced her discontent at how the ministry-subordinated institutions acted in the case of the Dambovita County bear, adding she would order a relevant inquiry being opened. She announced that, also on Monday, all the territorial forest inspectorates and hunting funds will be checked. The minister said that all the expert proposals for the area could be implemented in two months at the earliest. According to Plumb, the locals are no longer in danger, adding she is convinced that the measures ordered will protect the locals. She stated that local people had been informed and updated on what’s going on, were told that measures are taken and were cautioned to pay attention to everything that happens in the area.
