A Romanian yachting team has won the Rolex Swan Cup in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, for the first time in the competition’s history. “Natalia,” a Swan 42 boat led by Romania’s Natalia Brailoiu, won the Swan 42 class last week-end, after 5 days of racing, the event’s organizers announced. Natalia also received the competition’s special award for the best result so far: three 1st places and one 2nd place in the races that took place at Porto Cervo. “Natalia” is owned by KDF Energy, a company led by businessman George Brailoiu. “It’s an unprecedented result in Romanian yachting. Until now no Romanian boat had managed to win a regatta of such importance and tradition. It’s a historic, unbelievable victory. Maintaining the proportions, it’s similar to what Steaua did in 1986,” George Brailoiu stated for ‘Gandul’ daily. Natalia valiantly defended her lead in the Grand Prix class following a memorable week’s duel with fellow Swan 42 Magical Mystery Tour (GBR), according to yccs.it. Natalia Brailoiu’s crew did so in style, notching victory in the final race. Co-skipper Diogo Cayolla explained the secret to the crew’s successful week: “All week whenever we’ve been in bad positions we’ve been able to recover, and whenever we’ve started well we’ve hung on to our lead. The 42 is a very competitive class of boat. We’ve had quite a few days with light winds which has favoured us.” Natalia is a 42-foot racing boat registered in Romania under the license plate ROU 01. Rolex Swan Cup, one of the best known nautical sports races, is taking place each year, one year in Sardinia and one in the US. As a result, the Romanian crew will defend its title in America next year.
