ARD chooses candidates for parliamentary elections

Diaspora is appealing. State counsellor at the Presidential Administration, Eugen Tomac, will run for PDL on ARD lists for a seat of MP in District 2 Diaspora. Ex-Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi targets a seat representing District 1 Diaspora in the Senate, still on ARD lists.

The state counsellor at the Presidential Administration, Eugen Tomac, a former secretary of state for Romanians everywhere, will stand for election as a member of the lower Chamber of the Parliament for PDL, on the lists of the Fair Romania Alliance (ARD), in District 2 Diaspora, Mediafax quotes political sources as saying. Since May 2012, Tomac has been a state counsellor with the Cotroceni Palace, in charge of the affairs of Romanian citizens in the Diaspora, after he resigned as secretary of state and head of the Department for Romanians Everywhere (DRP), when the Ungureanu Government had been unseated. He had been in his DRP office since 2009, as a member of PDL. According to the quoted sources, his candidacy in the mentioned electoral district is regarded as ‘natural’ given his long-standing activity alongside President Traian Basescu. Prior to 2008, Tomac has been private adviser to the president. ARD sources say they are also discussing the possible candidacies on the lists of the Alliance of other Cotroceni Palace counsellors, such as Cristian Diaconescu, Bogdan Dragoi and Daniel Funeriu. The three presidential advisers however deny plans to run on ARD lists. Also, former tourism minister Elena Udrea, in a cone of shadow lately, might run for deputy in a Neamt County college. The invitation was extended yesterday by local leader Gheorghe Stefan who said he would be “honoured” if she were to stand fo Neamt County was not picked randomly by Elena Udrea. During her ministerial tenure, Udrea signed contracts worth over RON 540 M for Neamt County, with one-fifth of that amount going into the infrastructure in Roman and Piatra Neamt. Also, the leader of the Civic Force (FC), Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, was invited by the PDL to stand for Senate in Arad County, in a college where Gheorghe Seculici, too, leader of the Arad branch of the PDL, was proposed as a candidate.

Baconschi targets District 1 Diaspora

Ex-FM Teodor Baconschi is also interested to run in an electoral district in the Diaspora. He has even written an open letter addressed to the Romanians in the Diaspora, asking for their support to stand for election for ARD in District 1 Diaspora for the Senate in the election on December 9. Commenting on Baconschi’s letter, PDL Senator Viorel Badea accuses him of trying to obtain a place on the ARD lists of candidates by launching press attacks on him. ‘For a few days now I have been watching with surprise attacks a party colleague and, I thought, a friend launches through various media channels against me. These are things that are no longer settled in the mass-media as it used to be, by a <financed media jihad>, but via the PDL institutions. You cannot win a district by press features, but by everyday hard work!’ Senator Badea states in a Facebook post. Badea represents District 1 Diaspora, the same Baconschi wants now.

Marko Bela does not exclude UDMR presence in new Government

On the other hand, UDMR Senator Marko Bela does not exclude the participation of the Hungarian Union in the new Government, after the parliamentary election on December 9. In an interview for RFI, Marko Bela said the Union had to take into consideration being in the Government, without excluding the parliamentary support or even remaining in the opposition if UDMR ‘found no partners who accepted a positive programme regarding interethnic relations’. Marko Bela says UDMR will participate in the parliamentary election on December 8 separately.
