Champions League: CFR Cluj defeated by Manchester United, 2-1

Romanian title holders CFR Cluj were defeated at home by Manchester United on Tuesday evening in a Group H Champions League game, score 2-1 (1-1 at half time). Manchester United chalked up its 100th victory in the main European competition. Kapetanos opened the score for CFR Cluj in the 14th minute, Van Persie scoring for Manchester United in the 29th and 49th minutes. CFR Cluj coach Ioan Andone stated that he is sad because his team concedes easy goals but pointed out that Manchester United’s victory is undisputable. “It was a deserved and undisputable victory for Manchester United. We tried to live up to their level but this is all we were able to do. What pains me and the thing I’m sad for is the fact that we concede easy goals and at this level facing a team like Manchester you stand no chance. Their first goal was lucky because otherwise I would have changed things at half time. In the second half they clearly dominated us,” Andone stated. In his turn, Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson stated that Robin van Persie’s equalizer had an element of luck and opined that Ioan Andone’s team has chances to qualify. “We had very good ball possession. It’s very important to have this kind of possession in Champions League games. It was difficult for us at first, it’s always difficult when the host side takes the lead. We were lucky when Van Persie scored the equalizer, but overall we did our job. Van Persie’s second goal was absolutely fantastic. CFR has fantastic determination that is the same through to the last minute, and that is this team’s edge when compared to Galatasaray. I believe CFR has chances to qualify for the next stage,” Ferguson stated.
