Barroso and Schulz, in Bucharest to tackle European funds issue

Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, and Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, will be in Bucharest to discuss the issue of EU funds with Romanian authorities, Premier Victor Ponta announced, adding that  Romania is “on the right track” after the domestic political crisis  last summer, Mediafax reports. “We must see what to do in order that we don’t get punished for the things that didn’t go right in 2010-2011 over the absorption of European funds and for Romania’s lack of performance in the past years not being a downgrading criterion, so we wouldn’t be told ”you had the money, you don’t know how to use it, why do you then ask for more money   in 2014-2020 ?» the premier detailed. “The negotiation is quite tough, since, when you divide the domestic budget, each minister wants more for their ministry,” Ponta said, while in Bratislava. He also pointed out that an extraordinary summit will be held in late November of European heads of governments on the 2014-2020 budget.Ponta was in Bratislava Thursday and Friday to attend the Friends of Cohesion group meeting that discussed, in the presence of the presidents of the European Commission and European Parliament, the Community funds issue.
