PM Victor Ponta said Friday that he will talk at the beginning of this week with the European commissioner for Competition, Joaquin Almunia, about the request addressed by Romania to the EC for a loan aimed at restarting operations in Oltchim, curentul.ro reports. On the other hand, Ponta admitted that the European Commission (EC) is reluctant about member states’ demands concerning loans or state aid, so the situation of Oltchim must be explained as good as possible to Brussels officials. “If we do not explain our case well, we will not win. In 2009, when former minister Adriean Videanu asked for state aid – actually it was a much bigger sum, EUR 370 M – he had no success, because he neither explained, nor went there to say what he would spend that money for,” Ponta added. As for the time interval in which the EC will answer Bucharest’s requests, the premier explained that it should happen within 30 days, because the demand involves a sum under EUR 10 M.
