4 pc of Romanians use internet banking services, under the EU average

Internet banking services were used last year by less than 4 pc of Romania’s population, compared to an average 37 pc at EU level, Andrei Cretu, manager consulting with PwC Romania announced yesterday during the ‘Mediafax Talks about Mobile Banking’ event. In Romania, 47 of the population has internet access. Although it increased each year, the indicator remains under that of Hungary – 65 pc or Poland – 67 pc. Smartphones have a penetration rate of 14 pc of the total number of handsets, two percent points under the average of Central and Eastern Europe and eight percent points under the global average. The share held by smartphones in the total sales of handsets in Romania will increase to 30 pc in December, from a current 18-20 pc, estimate the head of the Telecom division of Samsung Romania, Sorin Manea. According to PwC data, Romanians make in average six card payments a year, much under other Europeans, because of the still low penetration of cards and POS terminals outside large towns. In his turn, Catalin Cretu the country manager for Romania of Visa Europe mentioned that the percentage of card transactions at POS machines is 18 pc in terms of value and 40 pc based on the number of transactions.
