EPP Congress starts today in Bucharest

The Congress of the European People’s Party (EPP) starts at Parliament Palace in Bucharest.

The congress will run for two days, today and tomorrow, and will join 2,000 participants including 16 heads of state and government from EU member countries. Among the speakers, German Chancellor  Angela Merkel, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, the current leader of the EPP, Wilfried Martens and President Traian Basescu as well.Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) Vice-president Anca Boagiu yesterday said that the Protection and Guard Service (SPP) and the “G4S” security company will be in charge of protecting the European leaders that will come to Bucharest for the EPP Congress. Anca Boagiu also said that the congress will adopt the politic program of the EPP. “By adopting the new political program we only give the answer to the question of what is happening in Europe and our answer is “More Europe”, Boagiu said, who added that the EPP Congress is held in Bucharest “in order to reach decisions on Europe” and not to show, as it happens with a “party that lies hidden in Brussels”, how you can “get hold of power”.Former premier Emil Boc yesterday said that the EPP Congress being held in Bucharest is a success for the PDL and recognition of the party’s merits as to its position in Europe. He said that the EPP Congress being held in Bucharest is a success also in view of the inability of the Social-Democratic Party (PSD) to organize the congress of the European Socialists in Bucharest, as they opted to hold it in Brussels instead, given “they would not have their name associated with Romania’s PSD.” According to Boc, Romania has all chances to get a post of EPP vice-president, which the party fully deserves, with the PDL to endorse Anca Boagiu for the vice-president position.“This is a post that the PDL fully deserves, considering the position it has among the European people’s parties,” the former Democrat-Liberal president said.
