Education Minister Ecaterina Andronescu stated on Friday that she analyzed the University of Bucharest’s file on Premier Victor Ponta’s doctoral thesis and that she needs a juridical point of view on it. “I’ve read the file. First of all, I need a juridical point of view. I want to respect the law, I never broke the law, it’s a law I didn’t make, I didn’t applaud, but I will not leave its framework,” Andronescu stated. The Education Minister announced last Thursday that she received the University of Bucharest report that shows that Premier Victor Ponta plagiarized his doctoral thesis. Also on Thursday, when asked whether she could take any measure considering that the law stipulates that only the National Ethics Council can rule on plagiarism issues involving state officials, Ecaterina Andronescu stated that “it is Mr. Funeriu’s law,” without pointing out whether she will take any measure. The file concerning the Premier’s plagiarism also contains a letter in which the university’s rector Mircea Dumitru asks the Education Minister to take the legal measures called for. Dumitru stated that the university was unable to ask for a certain measure to be adopted because the legislation currently in force does not allow tertiary education institutions to do so.
