“Bute Gala 2011” organizers investigated by DNA

Five members of the Romanian Boxing Federation’s Federal Bureau were summoned today at the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) in order to be heard in the “Bute Gala 2011” case. During that gala, Romanian boxer Lucian Bute defended his world title against France’s Jean Paul Mendy. Sources quoted by “Gazeta Sporturilor” state that the five members were the FRB Vice President, Fanel Trandafir (Vali Vrinceanu’s federal coach), the FRB’s general secretary, Cristi Constantinescu, and Titi Tudor (Doroftei’s former coach). DNA apparently wants to find out whether the decision to offer SC Europlus Computers SRL, the company owned by FRB President Rudel Obreja, the license to organize the professional boxing gala was taken during a Federal Bureau meeting on April 8, 2011. A part of the money needed to organize the July 9 gala came from the Regional Development and Tourism Ministry (MDRT) that Elena Udrea headed at that time. According to GSP, the Antifraud Department (DLAF) verified one year ago the way in which the boxing gala was organized and it notified the DNA in April this year about possible acts of corruption and other crimes committed mainly by FRB President Rudel Obreja. The audit report authored by the DLAF inspectors and sent to the DNA describes the way in which the FRB President offered Europlus Computers SRL, the company he owned, the exclusivity in organizing the “Champion for Romania” gala. The company obtained from MDRT, through direct negotiations, a contract of RON 10.1 M, whose goal was to “promote Romania’s tourism brand,” a programmed financed with European funds. DLAF inspectors reached the conclusion that Obreja’s company “did not have the technical and professional capacity to organize such a gala or to offer service of promoting Romania.”In its report, the DLAF accused Rudel Obreja of five possible crimes: attempt to illegally obtain EU funds, intercession, forgery and receiving undue benefits.
