Justice Minister Mona Pivniceru will announce today the names of the prosecutors nominated for the positions of Prosecutor General of Romania and Chief prosecutor of the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA).Judicial sources told Mediafax that, following deliberations, Tiberiu Nitu emerged as the most likely candidate for Prosecutor General of Romania, while the DNA Chief prosecutor options are split between Ioan Irimie and Claudiu Dumitrescu.The prosecutor general candidates were: military prosecutor Gheorghe Cornescu, Elena Hach, Gheorghe Mota, Tiberiu Nitu, former first-deputy prosecutor general of Romania, Constantin Sima, Viorica Stoica. Sima and Stoica also applied for the position of DNA chief prosecutor.The candidates for or DNA chief prosecutors were: Claudiu Dumitrescu, transferred to the position of the Anti-Fraud Crackdown Department (DLAF), Codruta Kovesi, transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), Vasile Ionita, Ioan Irimie and Paula Tanase. The ministerial proposals for the two positions will be tendered to the Superior Council of Magistracy.According to the chief prosecutor appointment regulations, the Superior Council of Magistracy has 60 days to issue a (consultative) go-ahead to the justice minister’s proposals, with Romania’s President to take the final decision on the matter at hand.Judicial sources had told Mediafax before the nominations proceedings began that it was also likely for Romania’s new prosecutor general and DNA chief prosecutor to be appointed after the legislative election December 9 – International Anti-Corruption Day. Later on, the nominations will also be made for the other 15 vacant positions at the Public Ministry.The government on Tuesday approved, at the justice minister’s proposal, an increase by up to 400 of court positions, namely 150 judge positions and 250 specialized ancillary staff.
