PSD mayor of Navodari, remanded for bribe giving

The Bucharest Tribunal decided Thursday to place on remand for 29 days the mayor of Navodari, Nicolae Matei, whom the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) accuses that, during June-October 2012, asked a judiciary police officer with a high position (the denouncer in the probe) to grant him protection in the criminal probes against him and to influences these investigations, which he considered as being “abusive, unjustified and politically motivated.” Nicolae Matei allegedly promised the officer a reward, “materialised in offering, on October 25, 2012, two plots of land in Navodari.”Nicolae Matei is a member of PSD and mayor of Navodari since 2008. According to the local press, during the last four years mayor Nicolae Matei, an associate in SC Dormarbib Grup, was involved in several rigged real estate transactions and auctions. The press alleges that granting the property right over the Navodari Children’s Camp was one of the most profitable deals conducted by Mayor Nicolae Matei. PSD Navodari is gathering signatures for releasing the local mayor from detention during the trial. Approximately 500 people attended Sunday a meeting in support of Nicolae Matei. The Minister of Culture, PNL senator Puiu Hasotti attended the rally and asked participants to support their mayor and militate for him.
