“Amour”, best film of the year

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association picked the best film of year 2012, as well as the best actor and best director.

French feature film “Amour” directed by Michael Haneke was chosen as this year’s best by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association on Sunday.Joaquin Phoenix was chosen as best actor for his part in the drama “The Master”.At odds with the New York critics, who presented their annual awards last week, the Los Angeles Critics Association also selected The Master’s Paul Thomas Anderson as best director, and Amy Adams, from the same motion picture, received the award for best supporting actress. “Zero Dark Thirty”, a thriller about the capturing and killing of Osama Bin Laden, was given the best film editing award.Last week, “Zero Dark Thirty” received two major awards from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle. The 60 members of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association showed once again having very different views, as their picks contradicted the choices by the American mainstream film industry.Emmanuelle Riva, 85, who plays a former piano teacher who suffered a brain stroke in the film “Amour”, which was awarded the Palme d-Or at Cannes this year, won ex-aequo the best actress of the year award with American actress Jennifer Lawrence, who play a young widow in “Silver Linings Playbook”, a comedy with dramatic accents.  Held as the top favorites for the Oscar Awards 2013, actor Daniel Day-Lewis (“Lincoln”) and actress Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”) were given the cold shoulder from the Los Angeles critics, and so were the much-awaited musical “Les Miserables” and the epic fantasy “The Hobbit”.Debutant Dwight Henry was selected as best actor in a supporting role in the independent film “Beasts of the Southern Wild”. Los Angeles film critics also gave the best screenplay award to “Argo”, directed by Ben Affleck, a film about the drama of some hostages in Iran.In 2011, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association chose the “The Descendants” directed by Alexander Payne as best long feature film. This week, there will be announced the Golden Globe Awards nominations and the awards given by the Screen Actors Guild/ SAG), which most of the time are an accurate indicator of the favorite motion films in the race the Academy Awards (Oscars) to be awarded next February. The nominations for Critics Choice Awards will be announced today, SAG will make public its nominations tomorrow, and the Golden Globe nomination, Thursday. The Oscar nominations will be announced on Jan 10. The Academy Awards Gala will take place at the Dolby Theater (former Kodak Theater) in Hollywood, Feb 24.
