Abbas thanks Pope for support to Palestinian state bid

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas met with the Holy Father in the Vatican Apostolic Palace Monday, Palestinian news agency Waffa reports. Abbas briefed the pope on the conditions in the holy land and the Israeli violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites, especially in the occupied city of Jerusalem. Abbas has met with Pope Benedict to thank him for supporting the recent U.N. resolution recognizing a Palestinian state. Abbas chatted privately with Benedict for 25 minutes and then met with the Vatican’s top diplomats. Abbas gave the Pope a mosaic of the church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, with the inscription saying it was presented by the ‘President of the state of Palestine.
