Pivniceru sends DNA, General Prosecutor nominations to Cotroceni

Justice Minister Mona Pivniceru sent President Traian Basescu the nominations for the chief prosecutors – Tiberiu Nitu for Prosecutor General of the Prosecutor’s Office of the High Court of Justice and Cassation (ICCJ) and Ioan Irimie for Chief Prosecutor of the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA)-, to president Traian Basescu.  According to a communiqué, the Ministry of Justice published on its website the comparative assessment of the interviews that had been held at the ministry as well as CSM as part of the procedure for the appointment of the Prosecutor General and DNA Chief Prosecutor, as well as the transcription of the audio recording to the meeting of the CSM Prosecutors’ Department on November 22, 2012, which issued a negative opinion on both nominations. CSM’s opinion is a consultative one, the final decision being with President Traian Basescu. The fact that the two proposals of candidates have been forwarded to the president is not at all surprising, as Pivniceru said, after her interview with the specialised committee before being appointed as Minister of Justice, at the end of last week, that she was not going to drop the two nominations. ‘A termination of the procedure would have to be agreed upon with the president of the republic, with the Government of Romania and, most of all, with the European Commission’, Mona Pivniceru said.
