Audiovisual body fines TV channels over coverage of Nicolaescu’s death

The National Council of the Audiovisual (CAN) on Thursday decided to fine Romania TV, B1, Antena 3 and Realitatea TV channels RON 100,000, 30.000 and 20.000 and RON 10.000 for encroaching on several audiovisual legislation articles in their coverage of the death of film director Sergiu Nicolaescu. CAN holds that the four television channels concerned violated  article 45 in the Code regulating the audiovisual content which stipulates: “(1) A person’s right to have its intimacy respected in difficult moments, such as an irreparable loss or misfortune; (2) In instances of human sufferance, natural disasters, accidents or acts of violence, where audiovisual  media service providers shall respect the image and dignity of the persons in such situations. The fine amount however differed, with Antena 3, B1 and Realitatea TV violating fewer audiovisual content Code articles than  Romania TV, according to most of the CNA members.
