Australian Open: No Romanians in the second week

While Horia Tecau won the mixed doubles event and Begu and Niculescu reached the quarterfinals last year, this year’s results were not as good. After his surprising elimination from the men’s doubles event where he paired up with Max Mirnyi, Horia Tecau could not find his rhythm in the mixed doubles event either. His teammate was America’s Bethanie Mattek-Sands, but the Romanian-American pair was eliminated in the opening round. Despite being the favorites, the two winners of the 2012 edition were defeated by Hradecka and Cermak, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8. Romania’s Irina Begu and Monica Niculescu were not luckier. The only 100 per cent Romanian pair in the Australian Open had a very good start in its last-16 stage women’s doubles game against Russia’s Vesnina and Makarova and won the break in game 7. That was enough to make the difference and the two were leading by one set after 42 minutes. Unfortunately, their opponents played extraordinarily until the end of the game and showed why they are the top seed 4 pair. Vesnina and Makarova, the latter also qualifying for the quarterfinals of the women’s singles event, lost only three other games and qualified for the quarterfinals. Final score: 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
