Alonzo King’s “Wildcats” on TVR 2

The Romanian TV station TVR 2 will air this Sunday, 10 February, starting 16.00 hours, the show staged by Alonzo King Lines Ballet during the 13th edition of the JTI encounters, organized by the Art Production Foundation in partnership with the Romanian Television. The show, consisting of two choreographic displays titled Dust and Light and Rasa, delighted the audiences of Bucharest and Chisinau in November 2012.

Alonzo King Lines Ballet was founded in 1982 by choreographer Alonzo King and has now become one of the most celebrated contemporary dance companies in North America.

The 12 lively, lissom and graceful dancers have masterfully managed to blend the rigorousness of classical ballet with modern technique. They were nicknamed “The Wildcats” after the show staged in Chisinau. Moreover, after the show hosted by the National Theatre in Bucharest, the Romanian media raved on about the skilful dancers that were so perfect in movement that they conveyed both sensuality and charm.

The show has been equally widely acclaimed throughout the world, be it in France, Germany, Italy or the US.

“The 12 dancers are tall, lissom and extravagantly gifted, and Alonzo King’s choreography shows them off to stunning effect. Dust and Light is a lyrical celebration of the forces whose interplay shapes our lives” (The Guardian).

“The heart of Rasa is an epic pas de deux for two of King’s most touching dancers” (San Francisco Chronicle).

However, each time is different because, as senior ballerina Meredith Webster (who started dancing at the age of 3) put it, the success of each show also hinges on the audience and the venue. The same held true for the Bucharest show, which was “different” thanks to the different density of emotions, vibrations, feelings and movements.

In Alonzo King’s words, “the goal of dancing is not to look well, but rather to reach transcendence”. Therefore, stay tuned to TVR2 this Sunday, starting 16.00 hours, for some angelical and yet wild dancing, borderline between accomplished beauty and transcendence!
