PNL Vice President Sorin Frunzaverde said on Antena3 TV that President Traian Basescu should only be impeached by Parliament if he broke the Constitution. Frunzaverde stressed that after having been quoted by the media as saying, shortly after the Basescu-Ponta-Antonescu meeting end of January, that ‘one should not negotiate with Traian Basescu. Traian Basescu must be impeached by the Romanian Parliament’. Frunzaverde criticised Monday night the statement the president had made on the fact that he would only agree to resign if the entire Parliament did the same, arguing that it meant ‘disregard for the result of the 2012 vote’. He added that USL had some major political and social projects, including the constitutional review which generates further changes of legislation. ‘I’m afraid Mr. Basescu will not play by the constitutional rules,’ Frunzaverde added. In his view, the review of the Constitution could not be completed this year, as USL wants comprehensive debates, as well as clear answers regarding the type of republic – presidential or parliamentary. PNL Vice President Sorin Frunzaverde also said on Monday that the Government had a deficit of communication in Europe, which had been proved by the latest CVM report, noting that USL has not yet realised the power of the vote it obtained in election and Traian Basescu had only stayed in position because of USL’s weakness. Frunzaverde also said the cohabitation pact between President Traian Basescu and PM Victor Ponta was not necessary.
