Antonescu, advised by former secret service chiefs, MP Ghita says

PSD MP says the Liberal leader is being advised by former SIE and SRI heads Catalin Harnagea and Virgil Magureanu, respectively. Harnaghea denies the information.

The war of statements between the PSD MP and media owner Sebastian Ghita and PNL MP Sorin Rosca Stanescu is far from being over, placing USL under a rather unfavourable spotlight. Sebastian Ghita told ziare.com Wednesday night that PNL President Crin Antonescu was being advised by the former head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), Virgil Magureanu, and by the ex-chief of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE), Catalin Harnagea.
‘It is a serious thing that, when Romania TV journalists express a certain position on Antonescu, proven Ceausescu’s Securitate agents (Sorin Rosca Stanescu and Dan Voiculescu – a/n) jump to defend him, who is being advised by Magureanu and Harnagea,’ realitatea.net quotes Ghita as having said. Ghita was actually answering statements made by journalist Sorin Rosca Stanescu the day before, suggesting that Ghita had been a covert SRI officer since the age of 19, but also attacks having been made on him by Dan Voiculescu’s Intact media trust.
Former SIE chief Catalin Harnagea denied the information disclosed by Ghita, according to whom he was advising PNL President Crin Antonescu, and said he was surprised to hear such things. ‘What I can tell you is that I am not Mr. Antonescu’s adviser. I don’t know if the other one is, but I am definitely not. I have known Mr. Antonescu for a while now, between 1996 and 2000 we were colleagues in the same coalition and even after 2000 we have had enough contact. I can’t imagine where Ghita took this information that I was his adviser. On what could I advise him?’ Harnagea asked.
On the other hand, he denounced Sebastian Ghita’s public reaction to the accusation of being a covert intelligence officer. ‘Mr. Ghita reacted the way an institution would have normally reacted. As if the intelligence services had been under attack. Let’s allow those services react,’ the ex-SIE head further noted.
Former SRI Director Virgil Magureanu has so far made no comment on Sebastian Ghita’s allegations.

Secret PSD-PNL meeting Tuesday night

On the other hand, Sorin Rosca Stanescu confirmed on Realitatea TV that the Social-Democrats and the Liberals had met Tuesday night to discuss a few sensitive subjects such as the MPs’ Statute, but – he said – it was not excluded they might have also talked about the attack made by the PSD MP and media owner Sebastian Ghita on Crin Antonescu. According to the Liberal MP, ‘it is clear’ that Ghita’s attacks target the PNL leader. ‘There has been a PSD-PNL meeting, but I didn’t know they also talked about Sebastian Ghita. I know they addressed the MPs Statute and negotiated all sorts of changes. It may be true (that they also discussed the Ghita subject – a/n), because today (yesterday – a/n), Mr. Ponta took some distance from Ghita,’ Rosca Stanescu said. In his opinion, PSD MP Sebastian Ghita is not speaking for Victor Ponta, he ‘has simply lost it’.
