Fencing World Cup: Ana Maria Branza victorious at St-Maur

Romanian fencer Ana Maria Branza won the epee competition at the Fencing World Cup in Saint-Maur, France, after she defeated Hungary’s Emese Szasz in the final, 11-6, Agerpres informs. Olympic runner-up in Beijing, Branza will receive 32 points for this success. She defeated Luxembourg’s Lis Fautsch in the opening round, 15-7, China’s Lin Shegn in the second round, 11-6, Italy’s Marzia Muroni in the last-16 stage, 13-5, Switzerland’s Tiffany Geroudet in the quarterfinals, 15-7, and Sweden’s Emma Samuelson in the semifinals, 15-8. Romania’s Simona Deac, defeated in the last-16 stage by Ukraine’s Olympic title-holder Semiakina, 15-13, finished on 15th place. Here are the places on which the other Romanians finished the competition: Ana Zdanovschi – 26th; Adriana Dumitru – 31st; Maria Udrea – 39th; Raluca Cristina Sbarcia – 71st. The Romanians will also take part in the team event.
