Over 100 laid-off employees protested too in front of Mechel Campia Turzii for the management’s failure to give them the severance pay due. “We are dying of starvation while government is sleeping,” Mediafax reported protesters as shouting. One of the protesters said people expect government to get more involved in bringing the collapse of the Romanian metallurgy sector to a stop. The protest has been authorized and workers vow to carry it on every day of the week thru Friday. After the steelworks at Florange (France) and Liege (Belgium) closed down, the European iron and steel industry got yet another blow after Russian group Mechel decided to sell its five production units in Romania for a mere EUR 52 to an unknown company in the field, a transaction jeopardizing several thousands of jobs, Hotnews.ro quoted AFP as reporting.
