Tokes claims he will sue Ponta

MEP Tokes Laszlo, President of the National Magyar Council from Transylvania (CNMT), stated in a communiqué quoted by Mediafax that he is “offended in his fundamental dignity of Romanian and European citizen” by Premier Ponta’s statements about him and he is thus forced to “defend his honor in court.” “The statement according to which I am allegedly using “a Horthyst discourse” offends my loyalty towards Romania and my identity as ethnic Hungarian. The Romanian Socialist Prime Minister’s baseless accusations are so serious that I am forced to defend my honor in court,” Tokes stated. According to him, the Premier’s statements are “the more serious as they represent the backdrop of the general anti-Hungarian political discourse that started with the current government coming to power.” Kincses Elod, Tokes’s lawyer, claims that the MEP is asking the Premier for RON 100,000 in moral damages. In reply, Ponta stated he does not change his position in what concerns Laszlo Tokes, pointing out that all Romanians would grow rich if they were to ask the MEP for damages for all his “aberrations.” We remind our readers that the dispute between Tokes and Ponta started after the former stated that Nicolae Ceausescu was “more generous” than Ponta because he allowed “somewhat of an autonomy for Hungarians” while the Premier does not allow the creation of a region that would correspond to the Szekely Land.
