Tomas Spurny: BCR wants a clean bank

It cannot be so difficult to redress a bank like BCR, which controls 10 per cent of the national network of branches, 20 per cent of assets, credits and deposits and has 15 per cent of the system’s employees, it only takes time, a strong management and a change of culture, Tomas Spurny, CEO of the biggest bank on the market, stated for zf.ro. “We have a fairly narrow window of just one year. The economy will start to grow again if not at the end of this year then surely in 2014, so we are under pressure to reach the position of being able to take advantage of the start of the growth cycle.” The intensive programme that Spurny’s team has started to implement, assisted by experts from the American consultancy company Bain, means changing BCR’s business model and profoundly reorganizing the bank, new approaches, both on the corporate and retail segments, as well as a powerful management platform for bad credits that would produce as much money as possible out of a portfolio of up to EUR 4 bln.  Spurny states that his ambition is not so much to improve BCR’s financial performance as it is to build a sustainable bank that would no longer have problems in the future.
