37,000 birds contaminated with salmonella

The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) announced Friday that it found 37,000 birds contaminated with salmonella enteritidis at a farm, realitatea.net reports. The birds were found during verifications conducted by ANSVSA inspectors as part of the programme aimed at countering salmonella and other diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans. The inspectors ordered the entire batch of birds to be killed and the resulting 53 tons of meat to be destroyed, ANSVSA informs. The farm took measures of cleaning and disinfection, and samples will be taken to check the efficiency of these measures. The farm will be repopulated with birds only when laboratory analyses will show that there is no danger of contamination, the Authority explained. ANSVSA president Mihai Turcanu assured that no quantities of chicken meat from the farm infected with salmonella has reached the market, nor did the milk infected with aphlatoxin that was found at another farm.
