Crin Antonescu does not exclude PNL-EPP rapprochement

In an interview to Adevarul daily to be run today and tomorrow, Senate Speaker Crin Antonescu says he does not rule out a rapprochement between PNL and the European People’s Party (EPP), however an EPP ‘without the current ungracious populist hues’. ‘If I were to mark some critical notes on EPP in the latest years, I would mention an overdose of populism and a decrease of democratic demands illustrated by its attitude to Viktor Orban. A remarkable politician, yet a politician whose inadmissible excesses have been covered by the EPP family. Sarkozy and Berlusconi are two people I am not evaluating as critically as others may do. On this aspect, I don’t share at all the views of my alliance colleague, Victor Ponta’, Antonescu said. Asked if he was not concerned that he had a position close to Traian Basescu’s in that respect, Crin Antonescu said: ‘On certain things, Mr. Basescu does have good taste. However, it would be an overstatement to claim I am Nicolas Sarkozy’s admirer, lest Berlusconi’s’. From his point of view, for a few years now, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has probably been Europe’s best politician and yes, she is a right-wing personality.
