Nearly 1,500 children abandoned in maternities or hospitals

Close to 1,500 children were abandoned in maternities or other medical units in 2012, up from 1,432 and 1,315 in 2011 and 2010 respectively, according to the Ministry of Labor, Family and Social Protection. Of all the abandonment cases registered last year, more than half were signaled in maternities. A number of 918 babies were abandoned by their mothers in the wake of birth, 426 were left in pediatrics sections and 130 in other hospital sections. The number of babies abandoned in 2012 is up from that in 2009, when 1,400 such cases were reported.
