Romania needs to know what its unconventional gas resources are, but a balance is necessary between investments and environment, the representative of the U.S Embassy in Bucharest, Duane Butcher told a press conference on unconventional gas, quoted by bizlawyer.ro. “States are interested to increase their energy efficiency, in the context of growing demand. Other countries, like the United Kingdom and Poland, analyse how they can lower the energy dependence and diversify their energy sources, with this regard. Of course, there must exist a balance between technology, the management of the investment, and the matters related to the environment,” the American diplomat said. The presidential advisor for national security Iulian Fota said, as a personal opinion, that the main focus is not on exploitation but on exploration. “Unconventional gas represents an evolution in energy that cannot be stopped anymore, but can be correctly managed. Not just the Western countries, but also countries like Russia and China are making efforts in order to explore the potential of unconventional gas and oil. It is important to know what resources you have, how high the potential is. At international scale, the competition is open, it started and goes on beyond our eyes,” Iulian Fota mentioned. He added that the energy sector will generate jobs in the future. “Jobs will be created only in strategic sectors, of interest for investors. Energy is one of these,” he said.
