Former Agigea Mayor sentenced to 9 years in jail for corruption

Ion Ionita, the former mayor of Agigea, was sentenced yesterday to nine years in jail for several counts of corruption, including the illegal appropriation of funds and fraud, Mediafax informs. The sentence is executory. According to investigators, the damages caused to the Local Council and physical persons total EUR 2 M. The court’s decision is not final and can be attacked at the Constanta Court of Appeals. According to the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) prosecutors’ case, the former mayor is accused of ordering the removal of a plot of land of 31 hectares from the locality’s private domain, without a Local Council decision in this sense. Officially the plot of land was meant to cover the requests filed by several persons that were asking for the reconstitution of their property rights, however Ionita’s real intention was for a part of that plot of land to end up in the possession of a physical person – Ion Sandu – at a derisory price.
