All eyes on PDL congress

Vasile Blaga invites Basescu to attend the party’s congress.

President Traian Basescu has been invited to the PDL congress on March 23. The decision was made on Friday by the commission in charge of the organisation of the internal election, upon PDL President Vasile Blaga’s request.

Beforehands, PDL MEP Cristian Preda criticised the fact that neither Traian Basescu nor a European People’s Party leader had been invited to the Congress.

On Sunday, during the presentation tour for the ‘New PDL – A New Romania’ motion of candidate Elena Udrea, ex PDL President Emil Boc said he wanted a president for PDL to keep the over ten year old ‘winning partnership’ with President Traian Basescu.

60 PDL Teleorman organisations threaten to boycott the Congress, unhappy with the fact that acting county organisation President Teodor Nitulescu has prepared the list of 91 delegates only including Vasile Blaga’s supporters.

PDL leader Elena Udrea stated on Sunday on Pro TV that Emil Boc, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, Catalin Predoiu, Cristian Diaconescu and Adriean Videanu are PDL’s possible presidential candidates.

Udrea  added that it will however be the new PDL leadership’s obligation to come up with the most credible presidential candidate, a candidate that would win the elections supported by all centre-right parties.

Udrea stated that Victor Ponta is her political opponent for the next 20 years. She said that Ponta has been trying to change his anti-European image “since last summer” but does not always succeed because he “slips from time to time.”

In reaction to Elena Udrea’s statements, PSD spokesperson Catalin Ivan stated  that she gave USL good news by nominating Boc, Ungureanu, Predoiu, Diaconescu and Videanu as possible presidential candidates, pointing out that together they would total 15 per cent of the votes at most.

The president of the Civic Force, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, and the president of PNTCD, Aurelian Pavelescu, signed Saturday, at the Parliament, the setup protocol of the Justice and Truth Alliance

Ungureanu and Pavelescu mentioned that the DA Alliance “merges the tradition and experience of PNTCD with the vision and new enthusiasm of the Civic Force” and “it is the first step towards the unity of the right.”
