The construction of Unit 5 of Cernavoda NPP will be stopped

The construction of Unit 5 of the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant will be discontinued and the destination and use of the existing structures will be changed, in order to achieve a safer operation of Units 1 and 2 and to improve the plant’s response to serious accidents, reads a draft government decision posted on the site of the Ministry of Economy. “The financing of these objectives necessary for securing the safe operation of U1 and U2 and, in the future, U3 and U4, also for improving the plant’s response to severe accidents, will be secured by S.C. Nuclearelectrica S.A. from own sources. The expenses of the beneficiary will be diminished by using the consumed investment value, the structures existing at the location of Unit 5,” the Explanatory Note mentions.
