Spain’s El Pais retracts Merkel comparison to Hitler

Spanish newspaper El Pais has retracted an article which unflatteringly compared German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Adolf Hitler, digitaljournal.com reports.Economist Juan Torres Lopez provoked controversy when he wrote in El Pais:Angela Merkel, like Hitler, has declared war on the rest of the continent, this time to guarantee (Germany) its vital economic space. She punishes us to protect her large companies and banks and also to hide from her electorate the shameful model that has seen the poverty rate in her country rise to its highest level in 20 years, 25 per cent of employees earn less than €9.15 an hour and half the population represent . . . a miserable 1 per cent of all the nation’s wealth.

The newspaper stated the article was withdrawn as it contained inappropriate statements.Merkel is often portrayed in an unflattering light in the Mediterranean countries forced to endure German demanded austerity. As a crisis situation in Cyprus unfolded last week Digital Journal reported Merkel forbid Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades from negotiating a rescue package with anyone other than the troika of international lenders. Der Spiegel reported she was driven into a fury by the silence from Cyprus and the country’s attempts to broker a deal with Russia.
