WC qualifiers: Romania to defend chances in Amsterdam

After obtaining with difficulty a tie last Friday in Budapest (2-2 against Hungary), Romania’s national football team will meet the Netherlands on Tuesday evening in Amsterdam. Romania hopes for a good result, although the statistics of direct games between the two teams do not leave room for much optimism.  Romania registered only one victory against Netherlands in 12 games and scored only 3 goals. Romania’s only win against Netherlands took place in the Euro Championships 2008 qualifiers, 1-0 in Constanta on October 13, 2007.

Coach Victor Piturca is nevertheless optimistic: “we go to Netherlands to win,” he stated after Saturday’s game against Hungary. Netherlands tops the Group D standings with 15 points, followed by Hungary and Romania in a tie (10 pts), Turkey (6 pts), Estonia (3 pts) and Andorra (0 pts).
