Nine paintings signed by Romanian painter Nicolae Tonitza and belonging to Stefania Manoliu’s private collection were sold in an auction organized by the Sadde Auctions House in Paris, for a total of EUR 122,300. According to the auction house’s website, quoted by Mediafax, “Portrait en profil d’une fillette” was the painting that obtained the highest bid – EUR 26,000. The painting had been estimated by specialists at EUR 15,000 – 20,000.
The other paintings signed by Nicolae Tonitza and sold at the auction organized on March 25 were: “Portrait de jeune fille” (EUR 4,100), “Petite fille au turban a la lecture” (EUR 4,200), “Petite fille a la lecture” (EUR 7,600), “Portrait de femme (Ecatarina?)” (EUR 10,200), “Portrait d’enfant au chapeau” (EUR 13,000), “Nu debout” (EUR 22,000), “Rosier grimpant” (EUR 18,000) and “Nu assis a l’etole rouge” (EUR 17,200). Paintings signed by Romanian painters Stefania Manoliu and Francisc Sirato – “Sighisoara” (EUR 1,200) and “Carciumarese” (EUR 750) – as well as works belonging to the Romanian 19th Century School, were also sold at the auction. The former collection of Stefania Manoliou, who was born in 1887 in Bacau and died in Paris in 1972, was seen for the first time in Paris at this auction. The artist had Nicolae Tonitza as a mentor. In 2012 Nicolae Tonitza was designated the most valuable Romanian painter in Romanian auctions.
