Davis Cup: Netherlands defeats Romania in Brasov

Romania’s Davis Cup team lost its match against Netherlands last week-end, thus failing to qualify for round two of Group I in the Europe-Africa Zone. Netherlands has thus qualified for the playoffs of the competition’s World Group.On Sunday Marius Copil was defeated by Thiemo de Bakker 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2). Romania’s Davis Cup team lost also its doubles game against Netherlands on Saturday. Romania’s Victor Hanescu and Marius Copil were defeated by Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4. On Friday, Victor Hanescu (58th ATP) was defeated by Igor Sijsling (70th ATP), 6-4, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-7 (5), 6-2, and Adrian Ungur (124th ATP) was defeated by Robin Haase (52nd ATP), 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The Davis Cup game counting for round two of Group I, Europe-Africa Zone, was played within Brasov’s “Dumitru Popescu Colibasi” Sports Hall. Romania’s attempt to overturn the result failed mostly because of the fact that Horia Tecau was unable to play on Saturday in the doubles game, according to Romania’s captain Andrei Pavel. Jan Siemerink, the Dutch captain, confessed after the doubles game that he did not expect for the fate of the game to be sealed after two games.
