Robert Cazanciuc sworn in as Minister of Justice

President Traian Basescu yesterday signed the decree on the appointment of Robert Cazanciuc as Minister of Justice. The sworn in ceremony of the new minister took place yesterday evening at Cotroceni Palace, in the presence of President Basescu and PM Victor Ponta. During the evening, after the ceremony, Cazanciuc took over the office of Justice Minister from interim minister Victor Ponta.

The signing of the decree was not a surprise, as President Basescu had said Thursday night on Digi24 TV that the proposal of Cazanciuc for the portfolio was ‘acceptable’ and noted that the criticism he had voiced against him in the past ‘was not justified’. Asked what he expected of the new minister, the president said he wanted him to finalise ‘appointments of chief prosecutors at all levels in the prosecutor’s offices’. Robert Cazanciuc has been a prosecutor since 1996 and Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2009. He was nominated by PM Victor Ponta as Minister of Justice last Thursday, by that ending the PM’s interim term at the top of the Ministry of Justice since Mona Pivniceru’s departure to the Constitutional Court.
