The BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tournament with prized up to 410,200 euros started yesterday in Bucharest. The 21st edition of the Bucharest tournament features important tennis players. Janko Tipsarevici (10th ATP), Gilles Simon, three-time winner of the tournament, Andreas Seppi (18th ATP) and Mikhail Youzhny, US Open semifinalist in 2006 and 2010, are the competition’s top four seeds. They will enter the competition starting on Wednesday, directly in round two. Until the top seeds enter the fray, Saturday’s draws established interesting first round duels too. Romania’s Victor Hanescu will meet a player coming from qualifiers and then, in case he wins, will play against Youzhny. Gilles Muller, who reached the US Open quarterfinals in 2008, will play against Lukas Rosol, the player that eliminated Rafael Nadal in the second round at Wimbledon last year. Horcaio Zeballos, winner of the Vina del Mar tournament and top seed 7, will play in the first round against Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Holder of a wild-card, Gael Monfils returns to Bucharest after 6 years. In the doubles competition, Romania’s Horia Tecau, winner of last year’s edition, returns to Bucharest alongside his new partner, Max Mirnyi. The two will face an extremely difficult first round against 2011 winners Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace. Yesterday Romanian Marius Copil was defeated by Serghei Stahovski (Ukraine) 7-5, 6-2, in the last round of qualifiers. Copil is to receive 6 ATP points and 675 euros.
