The National Anti-Corruption Department (DNA) prosecutors searched the Ramnicu Valcea Municipality as well as Mayor Emilian Francu’s (PNL) address yesterday, Mediafax informs. Judicial sources say the mayor is a suspect in a bribery case in connection with the construction of a flyover at the entry into the city of Ramnicu Valcea. The mayor will be taken in to DNA Pitesti for questioning, the sources further said. Emilian Frâncu is the second mayor of Ramnicu Valcea to have been under DNA investigation.
Former Mayor Mircia Gutau and his former deputy, Nicolae Dicu, were convicted and sentenced to three and a half years in prison each by the High Court on January 27, 2010. Gutau and Dicu were accused by the anti-corruption prosecutors that, from April to July 2006, they had claimed EUR 50,000 from Constantin Popescu, owner of Rovimet company – who denounced them – in order to issue him an urbanism certificate. Nicolae Dicu was caught in flagrante by DNA on July 6, 2006, when Popescu was handing him EUR 25,000 and Mircia Gutau was arrested five days later.
