Adrian Nastase: There is pressure in PSD for having its own presidential candidate

Although the representatives of the two major parties that form USL (PSD and PNL) agreed, through the collaboration protocol concluded in 2011, that PNL leader Crin Antonescu will be the candidate of the Union in the presidential elections of next year, some voices inside the alliance claim that things are not 100 pc settled. This is also the case of former premier Adrian Nastase, who said Saturday evening that there is “certain pressure” inside PSD for designating the own candidate of the party for the presidential elections, which would leave PNL with the office of PM. “But this would obviously upset Crin Antonescu very much,” Nastase said for Antena 3. He added that the decision about PSD and PNL running on separate lists in the European elections show that this ballot is more important than the presidential one.

The dissident wing of PNL has its own opinion about the presidential race of 2014. After launching the idea to hold an internal ballot in view of nominating the presidential candidate, former PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu said that he does not rule out even his own candidacy for the most important office in the state. He stated that he will enter the race for Cotroceni when he will see that “a well-structured project, with support” exists in Romania. “If this project takes shape, then I can think about running for president,” Tariceanu said on B1 TV. In his turn, District 1 mayor Andrei Chiliman – also a founding member of the Liberal Romania initiative (IRL) criticises the president of PNL in an interview with ‘Adevarul’, saying that “he subordinated PNL to his purpose and obsession of becoming the president of Romania.” Asked if he will support Antonescu for president, Chiliman gave a negative answer. “He did not convince me that he would be a good president of Romania, with everything he did until now, so he can be sure that I will never support him for this position,” the mayor said.
