The President of the ‘People’s Movement’ Foundation, Marian Preda, said, on Saturday, that, after setting up several county branches, his organisation would initiate public debates on subjects on which the public is not sufficiently consulted, to which President Traian Basescu will also be invited. Preda added that some of the themes would be the constitutional review, regionalisation and demographic risks Romania is facing. ‘After setting up branches in several major cities, there will be a sub-county level organisation stage and we will encourage the constitution of clubs and initiative groups in smaller localities.
We will also release a few national projects to be followed, after opening most of the planned county organisations, by a programme of public debates addressing major Romanian themes of general interest, on which the public is not sufficiently consulted. As promised, President Traian Basescu will participate as a guest in one of these big debates in major university centres. The debate themes will be the revision of the Constitution – where we will have to see what happens about the results of the 2009 referendum on the unicameral Parliament and a total of 300 MPs, regionalisation and demographic risks of Romania,’ Preda said. According to him, the series of public debates could begin in a matter of months.
