According to Mediafax, nearly 10,000 people attended Sunday evening’s performance of the “Banatul” Philharmonic Timisoara on the bank of the River Bega, an event dedicated to Europe Day. The concert, performed by 100 instrumentalists and eight soloists, began with a parade of the flags of European Union member countries, with each flag carried in a canoe, against a musical backdrop consisting of various arias. Sopranos Alina Todea and Maria Virginia Onita appeared before the audience in a boat, and two more sopranos, both South Korean – SoYoung Yu and EunHye Kim – disguised themselves as cats, while on the Bega a “little mouse” in a boat was trying to catch big chunks of “Swiss cheese” floating on the water. The most heartfelt moment of the evening was when Catalina Costin, dressed as Scheherazade and performing the eponymous song composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, welcomed her prince who approached her while sailing on water. The prince was none other but Catalina’s lover, Cristian Trinca.
After the aria ended, he proposed marriage to her, amid thunderous applause from the audience. The evening wrapped up with a spectacular fireworks display and an encore performed by the orchestra which prompted everybody to dance, including conductor Radu Popa
