President Traian Basescu announced yesterday evening, during a speech at Cotroceni Palace, that he has assigned the six prosecutors, on which the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) had given its assent, to the high offices they were proposed for. “I asked all of them to make up a team, to increase the level of fight against corruption and organised crime,” the president said. Basescu added he has had talks with all candidates during the latest days.
President Basescu said he has asked Tiberiu Nitu, appointed for prosecutor general, to clarify at least two issues regarding the secrets of the 1989 Revolution, one of them being related to who ordered the army to get to the streets equiped with war ammunition.
The president also tackled two other issues: the properties restitution law and the informal European Council set for May 22.
