The European Minerals Day (EMD), an event organized by the European institutions and local partners every two years, will be celebrated also in 2013 in Romania, in Rosia Montana, through a series of events dedicated to the public at large. The organizer of the manifestations, Rosia Montana Gold Corporation, has prepared various activities, from documentary films and lectures on the topic of minerals, to practical geologic activities that include a workshop on traditional gold panning.

“In Romania, we celebrated the European Minerals Day for the first time in Rosia Montana in 2009. Ever since, RMGC has become a constant supporter of the manifestations dedicated to this event. Through the actions prepared for this year, we want to highlight the importance of minerals and the essential role they play in our life, from increasing the quality of life to economic development, by creating jobs in mining and in related industries”, said Dragos Tanase, Managing Director, Rosia Montana Gold Corporation.

The 2013 EMD  in Rosia Montana will be held from May 20th to 26th. Between May 20th and 23rd, pupils from “Ion Agarbiceanu” General School from Bucium, “Simion Balint” General School from Rosia Montana, Secondary School from Campeni, “Avram Iancu” National College from Campeni, “Horea, Closca si Crisan” School Group from Abrud, and Forestry School Group from Campeni will take part in interactive presentations on the importance of minerals in daily life. Following a contest, 40 of them will then have the opportunity to visit the Gold Museum from Brad, Hunedoara County.

University Professor Ph.D. Gheorghe Popescu will deliver the lecture “The Economic Geology of Gold. The Romanian Gold” on Thursday, May 23rd, at “1 Decembrie 1918” University from Alba-Iulia, and Univ. Lecturer Ph.D. Calin Tamas will deliver a course for students of the Geology Faculty within Babes-Bolyai University from Cluj-Napoca on Friday, at the “Gold of the Apuseni Mountains” exhibition in Rosia Montana, on the topic of “The history of minerals and mining”. The practical part of the course will then take place in the underground, in Catalina-Monulesti Gallery, which preserves traces of mining exploitation since the times of the Romans.

For Saturday, May 25th, and Sunday, May 26th, RMGC Geology Department prepared a workshop on traditional gold panning. The visitors of the local “Gold of the Apuseni Mountains” mining history exhibition will thus have the opportunity to experience the traditional gold cleaning technique, but also to find out unique information about this precious metal, about the modern exploitation technologies and the importance gold has always had in this part of the country.

Awareness-raising actions on the importance of minerals, throughout the world

The European Minerals Day is an initiative of the European mining industry launched in 2007. Every two years, at the end of spring, a series of events are organized in the European countries to enable the public at large, including pupils, representatives of the public administration and journalists, to explore the world of minerals and find out more about this industry with impact on all the aspects of human life.

Minerals play a key role: 70% of the products manufactured in the European Union depend on substances coming from mining, according to the official website of the event, www.mineraldays.eu. Building, chemical, automotive, aerospace and machinery industries, cumulating a value of 1,324 billion euro and 30 million jobs – they all depend on the access to raw material.

At the first edition of the European Minerals Day, in 2007, over 30,000 people participated in the events organized in more than 100 locations from 17 European states, while the number of countries involved increased to 27 in 2009. The previous edition (2011) included for the first time also countries from outside of Europe – over 200 events organized in 21 European States and 11 from the rest of the world.

In Rosia Montana, the event was marked in 2011 by organizing the geological exhibition of mine flowers “Florile din adancuri” (Flowers from the underground). 60 varieties of mine flowers from the main mineral classes, with explanations and informative materials, were exhibited for three weeks at RMGC’s Information Centre in the locality. Also with this occasion, a workshop was organized on traditional gold recovery techniques, where the visitors had the opportunity to see historical ore crushing and washing techniques.

For this year, the European Commission chose the European Minerals Day as a main tool to promote the “European Partnership for Innovation” initiative, aiming to emphasize the role of raw materials throughout the production process, with focus on innovation and efficient use of resources.
