Elena Basescu: Romanian authorities should draft a mass-media code of ethics

PDL MEP Elena Basescu addressed the European Parliament (EP) plenum, saying Romanian authorities should draw up a mass-media code of ethics, as recommended in the MCV report of the European Commission. She addressed the plenum in a debate on the passage of an EP resolution on freedom of the mass-media, based on a report drafted by PNL MEP Renate Weber. Elena Basescu said she supported the Weber Report, as she herself believes that, while “defamation should not be incriminated in the EU Member States”, national professional standards and codes of ethics should be drawn up.
The European Parliament passed Tuesday the Renate Weber Report on standard mass-media freedom norms, which contains a recommendation for EU member states to pass legislative against newspaper editorial offices being infiltrated by undercover agents.
Also, the Weber Report calls on the European Commission to monitor how member states observe freedom of the press.
