The officials of women’s handball club Oltchim, Romania’s title holder, failed to bring important sponsors at the team and the lack of money will result in the departure of the main players, Mediafax informs. Cristina Neagu, Alexandrina Barbosa, Paula Ungureanu, Ada Nechita and Iulia Managarova will leave Oltchim. In these conditions, the team’s new goal could become avoiding relegation. The budget needed for next season (EUR 1.5 M), a budget announced early this month, is impossible to have at this moment.
The failure in the Romanian Cup, where Oltchim was eliminated in the first round, has hurt even more the club leadership’s attempts to find new sponsors. Bulatovic, Jovanovic, Manea, Farcau and Meirosu (retired) left Oltchim in the first stage. The club’s leadership does not have the certainty of coming up with the necessary budget to tackle the Champions League, because it would need a minimum of EUR 1 M. Thus, the option of not signing up Oltchim, a team that reached the final in 2010 and the semifinals in the last two seasons, is being considered.Oltchim’s record includes 19 championship titles, 7 of which won in a row. Last season the club had the largest budget in its history – approximately EUR 3 M. However, the team failed to win the Champions League. Oltchim was defeated by Hungary’s title holders Gyor in the semifinals.
