Antonescu: Tariceanu stays within PNL, free to criticize

“I know what to do. I never followed and I won’t follow anyone so he can keep his concerns,” the former Premier replied
to PNL President Crin Antonescu.

The exclusion of District 1 Mayor Andrei Chiliman from PNL has generated a verbal exchange between PNL President Crin Antonescu and former Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu, the latter being close to Chiliman. It all started with a statement that Antonescu made on Monday evening, according to which Tariceanu can stay within PNL even if he criticizes the party once in a while, “the point was for him not to join Chiliman’s entourage.”
“Mr. Tariceanu has had critical positions and he will probably still have them, no problem. All I said publicly and all I wanted to happen was for Mr. Tariceanu not to take part in the entourage of Mr. Chiliman, Mr. Melescanu, Mr. Ungureanu, Mr. Pitigoi and whoever else is trying to rebuild the right-wing somewhere else. (…) Even though he is critical, he never was and he never is put in doubt within PNL, where I am sure he will remain,” the PNL President stated. At the same time, Antonescu stated that unlike Chiliman, during the period Calin Popescu Tariceanu was the leader of PNL he never brought accusations or libels against him like the District 1 Mayor did in his case.
Despite the PNL President’s pacifist statements, Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated yesterday that Antonescu can keep his concerns, pointing out that he knows what to do, will never follow anyone and does not feel the need to be appreciated. “I believe his concerns should rather have to do with PNL’s fate and future because we all want PNL to end up being the only or the most important centre-right party and there is still a lot of work to be done here,” Tariceanu stated. In what concerns Chiliman’s exclusion from PNL, the former PNL President stated that the move left him bitter, pointing out that he witnessed “the public execution” of an old Liberal member and the problem behind the difficult situation PNL finds itself in has to be searched in its relationship with PSD.
