Calafat-Vidin Bridge to open on June 14

The new road bridge connecting Calafat to Vidin will be opened on June 14 and will be managed by a Romanian-Bulgarian joint venture, the bridge toll being EUR 6, Transport Minister Relu Fenechiu said yesterday while in Calafat to check on the progress of the works. The official said the project was almost done and that the bridge would be operated by a Romanian-Bulgarian joint venture to be disclosed on the inauguration day. The bridge toll will be redistributed to the two countries in keeping with their respective contributions to building the bridge: 83 per cent Bulgaria and 17 per cent Romania.
During the visit, various issues regarding the quality of the rail but mostly road infrastructure were brought to the attention of the minister, problems the ministry and the constructor hope to deal with before the opening. ‘I was assured that, by June 9, the cabins for the Border Police on both the Romanian and Bulgarian side will be set up,’ Fenechiu said. It is estimated that the bridge will be used by over 100,000 vehicles every year. Romania and Bulgaria signed an agreement for building the Calafat-Vidin Bridge in March 2000, but the project stalled because of lack of money. The two-km long bridge over the Danube belongs to the pan-European transport corridor that connects the German city of Dresden to Istanbul (Turkey).
