Basescu hopeful for Schengen accession by year-end

President Traian Basescu said at a meeting of Italian businesspeople on Thursday that he hoped for a positive decision in December regarding the accession of Romania to the Schengen Area. ‘The access to the Schengen Area will hopefully receive a positive result in December this year’, Basescu said, according to Mediafax.
He noted that a second objective was the joining of the eurozone, a process that had been put on hold for several years by the economic crisis in the European Union.
The head of state gave a speech at the event hosted by Confindustria Romania on the subject of Romanian economy and commitment of Italian enterprises on the Romanian market, as well as trade between Romania and Italy.
The decision on the time-table for the accession of Romania and Bulgaria was postponed at the Justice and Home Affairs Council in March, following the opposition of Germany, the Netherlands and Finland, all making clear they wanted to see more progress with the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism on Justice in both Bucharest and Sofia. The next CVM report of the Commission is expected in December this year.
